Mitosis in Onion Root Tips

Thumbnail of Nikon microscope Nikon microscope used to view the following root tip squashes. Root tips of onion (Allium cepa) have been treated with colchicine to "freeze" the cells at metaphase, and stained with Feulgen stain (for DNA) prior to being squashed and mounted for viewing.

Thumbnail of cells in various stages of the mitotic cyle Most cells are in interphase, with one cell clearly in late anaphase.
Thumbnail of cells held in C-metaphase With cells held in C-metaphase (due to the action of colchicine) you are able to aount the chormosomes. In onion 2n=16, you should therefore be able to make out 16 chromosomes in this picture. The picture below is of a higher maginification - and this might assist you.
