Root tips of onion (Allium cepa) have been treated with colchicine to "freeze"
the cells at metaphase, and stained with Feulgen stain (for DNA) prior to being
squashed and mounted for viewing. |

With cells held in C-metaphase (due to the action of colchicine)
you are able to aount the chormosomes. In onion 2n=16, you should therefore be
able to make out 16 chromosomes in this picture. The picture below is of a higher
maginification - and this might assist you. |

Each chromosome is (at this stage) actually made up of two identical
chromatids joined at the centromere. These make the structure "X" shaped. |
