### INFORMATION FOR NEW SUBSCRIBERS ###

May I welcome you to the Biotutor/Scitech/Sport Discussion List. I've included in this email some information which should hopefully enable you to make good use of Biotutor/Scitech/Sport. So please save this message for future reference, especially if this is the first time you have subscribed to an electronic mailing list.

### SENDING MAIL TO THE LIST ###

This is VERY simple. To send mail to the subscribers of Biotutor/ScitechSport simply send your email to BIOTUTOR-L@UCLAN.AC.UK, SCITECH-L@UCLAN.AC.UK or SPORT-L@UCLAN.AC.UK. When you send mail to this address LISTSERV will automatically make copies of your email and distribute them to all current subscribers of Biotutor/Scitech/Sport. You will receive notification from LISTSERV that your mail has been sent, and also get a copy of the mail sent back (since you yourself are one of the Biotutor/Scitech/Sport subscribers).

### SETTING LISTSERV FOR YOUR SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS ###

Essentially are TWO ways to have LISTSERV deliver mail to you :-

  1. BY DEFAULT LISTSERV will send you mail messages individually, as they are received and processed. This is great if you have good access to a PC and want to respond quickly to any postings.
  2. However, if you have more limited access to a PC, and do not want numerous mail messages building up in your email intray, you may want to set LISTSERV to run in "digest mode". A digest is a weekly compilation of all postings to the list in one large message. LISTSERV will thus send you only one digest per week, currently each FRIDAY. Digests are good for people who don't want to clutter up their mailbox with lots of single postings, and who want to read the week's postings in one sitting. You can easily set these options (and indeed many others) from the Web Page :- http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/biotutor-l.html, http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/scitech-l.html http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/sport-l.html

### BIOTUTOR/SCITECH/SPORT ARCHIVES ###

The Web Pages http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/biotutor-l.html, http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/scitech-l.html and http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/sport-l.html also houses the extensive (and PRIVATE) Biotutor/Scitech/Sport archives in a searchable form. These archives go back to Spring 1998 and enable you to see if anyone else has previously raised an issue on the List before you actually send your email. Or you may just want to browse the archives to see what has been discussed recently.

### LEAVING BIOTUTOR/SCITECH/SPORT ###

In the event you wish to leave the Biotutor/Scitech/Sport Discussion List, this is best done via the Web Page http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/biotutor-l.html, http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/scitech-l.html or http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/sport-l.html Otherwise email your request to leave DIRECTLY to pkrobinson@uclan.ac.uk

NOTE: Please DO NOT email a request to leave to BIOTUTOR-L@UCLAN.AC.UK, SCITECH-L@UCLAN.AC.UK or SPORT-L@UCLAN.AC.UK as this gets sent to all subscribers, and leads to annoyance.

### AND NOW ITS UP TO YOU... ###

Above all, please feel free to CONTRIBUTE to the Biotutor/Scitech/Sport discussions, and if you find any problems with the List please send an email directly to me - pkrobinson@uclan.ac.uk. You may also be interested to know that we have set up a Web Site as a companion to the Biotutor/Scitech/Sport Discussion List. This houses a Resources Library together with some useful Links Pages. You can find this Web Site from :- http://www.biology4all.com So welcome aboard.....I hope you enjoy the discussions !!!

Question:

I think that I have received a virus from the Biotutor, Scitech or Sport List - how can I get rid of it?

Answer:

Since subscribers rarely send email attachments to Biotech-L, Scitech-L and Sport-L the chances of getting a virus are slim. We have however had instances of a Wscript.KakWorm being passed on via the Discussion Lists as this can reside within the email tself (and does not need an attachment to move from PC to PC). Wscript.KakWorm is a Win32-based email worm - it does not corrupt any data on your hard drive, however it is designed to shut your machine down on certain days which may inadvertently result in a loss of data. The best way to get rid of this virus is to follow the instructions provided at http://www.getvirushelp.com/kak/

Getvirushelp.com also offer information fro the eradication of other viruses.

We always advise users of Biotutor, Scitech and Sport to have a virus checkers such as Norton AntiVirus or McAfee VirusScan running on their machine. These programs will scan files as they are saved to your computer's storage devices, including incoming email attachments.

Question:

How do I get access to the Web Archives for the Biotutor, Scitech or Sport List?

Also

How do I get a Password to get into the Web Archives, or to allow me to change my Subscription Options?

Answer:

The Web Pages http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/biotutor-l.html, http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/scitech-l.html and http://www.uclan.ac.uk/archives/sport-l.html house the extensive (and PRIVATE) Biotutor, Scitech and Sport Web Archives. To view these archives you need to be a current List subscriber.

These archives go back to March 1998, July 2000 and June 2002 for Biotutor, Scitech and Sport respectively, and enable you to see if anyone else has previously raised an issue on the List before you actually send your email. Or you may just want to browse the archives to see what has been discussed recently.

The first time you visit the archives you will need to create yourself a List Password. When you click on any item on the Archive Web Page you will receive a message saying that you need a password - there will be a link on the page which reads "get a new LISTSERV password first". Click on this link.

You will now be asked for your email address (it has to be the same address as that with which you are subscribed to Biotutor, Scitech or Sport). You will also need to create yourself a password. This will need to be typed in twice for verification.

Listserv will now email you a confirmation message (this process thus prevents others from setting or changing your password).

The email should arrive very quickly to your intray. It will read as follows:

"Your command: PW REP XXXXXXXX requires confirmation. To confirm the execution of your command, simply point your browser to the following URL: http://www.uclan.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wa?OK=XXXXXXXX."

When you receive this email just click on the URL link in the email and you will receive a command confirmation saying that your password has been registered successfully.

Now you can go back to the Web Archives, enter your password and see what's there.

If your PC is secure you might even want to store the password as a cookie within the PC so that you don't have to enter it each time you want to enter the Archives.
